DIY Avenger's Black Widow Costume

Widow Whether you’re going to a Halloween party or just into cosplay, no one can resist a superhero and one of the more popular female characters from the Marvel universe, Black Widow. In fact, thanks to the Marvel’s Avengers movie series, Black Widow has become one of the more popular choices for costumes.

Now at first glance it might seem like hers is a difficult look to replicate but you’d be surprised at just how easy it really is. It just takes a little resourcefulness and some quick and easy craftwork. You’ll be looking the part in no time! Some parts of her outfit will need to be customized but many of the basics you might even have at home.

Clothing

The main part of the look is her black cat suit. Of course, in the original world of the Avengers, her suit is one piece and made of leather. It is possible to purchase a cat suit, you can find almost anything online, but it’s not really necessary. A black tank top, black leather jacket and a pair of black leggings (leather or any other material will work fine) will get the job done just as well.

Accessories

Once you have the main outfit, then you need to add in the details that make Black Widow’s look unique. These include her S.H.I.E.L.D. shoulder patches, utility belt with black widow symbol belt buckle, fingerless black gloves, guns and bullet bracelets. Again, some of these can be made from everyday items you have in the house, others or their components can be purchased online.

S.H.I.E.L.D. patch

Replicas of the distinctive S.H.I.E.L.D. patches can be found at Etsy or other online sites, but if you don’t want to spend the money on them, you can easily make them using craft foam, a ballpoint pen and a black Sharpie. Simply cut out circular pieces of the craft foam, draw on the S.H.I.E.L.D. bird logo and fill it in with the Sharpie. Make sure the two birds face in opposite directions for the two sides of her body.

Belt

The utility belt could be any wide black belt you happen to have or you can purchase an inexpensive one. You’ll need to add the grey “metal” belt buckle with the hourglass black widow symbol, which you can once again make from craft foam. Use a piece of gray foam for the bottom layer, then a red layer and finally a black layer on top, all in the hourglass shape that is commonly seen on black widow spiders.

When you have the whole thing done, you can attach it to your belt with a hot glue gun. Plastic toy guns can be purchased for very little at any costume store, along with a replica bandolier, which can be easily shortened to the right length for your wrists by removing a single bullet and reattaching the ends. You can use any kind of black gloves and just snip off the fingertips to complete the look.

Hair

Black Widow is, of course, known for her fiery red hair. If you don’t have naturally red hair, you can easily pick up a cheap red wig. And there you have it… just a few simple DIY steps and you’re ready to take on the mantle of the Avenger’s resident badass babe!
